I got a baitcaster awhile ago and haven't used it much. Everytime I try to cast I get backlash. Can anyone give me some tips on how to use a baitcaster and what to use with it?

Thanks,
Jon

We need to know what kind and model you have. Also what rod and pound test line?
Different reels adjust different ways but generally it's not to tough to handle.

Abu Garcia ambassadaur 1003LP
Shakespeare Agility 8'6" Meadium-Heavy Action
10 or 12 lb test

I got it for trolling but was hoping I could learn to cast with it.

I've got a few Agility's to go with all my expensive stuff, I seem to like them. 8'6" though, that's a little big.

I'm just starting out really and don't have too much money to spend. I'm pretty tall so the guy said the longer I could handle the easier I will be able to cast? I did intend just to troll with it, I'm pretty comfortable with a spinner and will more than likely stick to them. Any suggestions for a better set-up are appreciated.

You need to put away the 8' 6" rod and trade it for a 7'0" Medium or medium heavy bass fishing rod. Bass Pro Shops makes reasonably priced rods that are pretty good.

You have to set up your baitcaster different for each lure you tie on. The key is to be able to press the button and let your lure fall to the ground, hit the ground and not backlash. Hopefully your reel has some sort of braking system. I would have to look at it to show you how to adjust everything.

Good luck

Justin

I went a whole day with only 1 backlash Smile . I have to use a sidearm cast to do it effectively and still need to work on accuracy. Does anyone have any tips on different casting techniques? I've been trying to learn to pitch and flip. Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Jon

Hey there Jon. Well, I can tell you that practice is the only way to get better with a baitcaster. A good way to do that, besides on the water, is to get a 5 gallon bucket and place it so far away from your boat, get in, then start casting, pitching, and flipping till your hand goes numb. Move it to different places and you will start to see the results. Really there is no better practice than out on the water but that helps a lot. Hope that helps and good luck.. Smile

Thanks, that's pretty much what i've been doing. I found some free videos online showing me how to pitch and flip and have just been practicing. It was hard not knowing where to start since I don't fish with anyone that uses a baitcaster. I am learning to like it even though I haven't fished with it yet.
I hope to get out this weekend and put it to use. Smile

Jon
