Friday we practiced until 4 and it was not a good practice. All the fish we found the weekend prior vanished. Even the scattered weeds on flats 1 of the 2 patterns we had were gone, so back to the drawing board. After discovering our fish left in the first hour of practice we concluded to try another pattern before the sun came up over the trees. We guessed right the smallmouth were loaded on these areas. In about an hour and a half we had about 20 good bites. We only stuck about 5 of them to see what quality was there all 3-4's with 5's cruising. Then the sun came up and we struggled to get bites until practice time was over. Our hopes were down because we thought it might take 25 pounds to win and only felt confident enough to get 15-18 after a day like that. We knew the heat and lake turnover effected the fish and hoped that the rest of the field struggled as well.
Tournament Day, we were feeling roughhhhhhhhhhhh me and Herman were extreemly hung over after a long night of drinking at the banquet and hooters. Since we rarely drink anymore this was a bad idea but seemed a good one at the time our hotel was right next to hooters. We took off in the first flight in 14th position, actually there was two 14's because BAU forgot to give us a #. This was good because we thought it was important to get to our areas as early as possible, thats when we got bit the day before. We get to our spot and what do you know the smallmouth left again. I got one stinkin bite in the first hour good for a 2.5, not what we were looking for. We decided to fish the gravel sand wood weeds and breaks until we located them, in the process of looking Herman boated a 5.5 and we stuck to this pattern for the last 4 hours of the tournament. In the next 4 hours we had 5 bites, scattered about one every 30-45 min. We landed 4 and one shook my bait on the first jump with my 7.5 foot loomis jammed as deep in the water as I could get it to prevent just this from happening it was a 3.5-4, but sometimes there is nothing you can do. The 4 we landed were all 3 to 3.75 pounds with a 5.5 in the box. We were happy we scratched together a mediocre bag for leelanau after hard day but thought we might finish in the middle of the pack. This was the toughest day we experienced in 4 days of fishing by far.
It turns out that the fishing was extreemly slow for the rest of the field due to the heat conditions and the lake turning over. Our sack weighed 17.98 and big fish at 5.47 this ended up being good enough for 3rd place and 2nd big bass. First place went to Tad Hepler who had 20.3, big bass went to some guys from the east side with a 6.4 hog, congrats guys. I talked to the Nelsons, cool guys, they brought in 15 I believe and finished in top 10 maybe. They said they missed some hogs even a 7 on those nerv racking jumps. Im looking forward to next year, the BAU had some kinks to work out but put alot of $ into this classic with the payout and banquet and had a very well run tournament. See you next year.
Tim

Great Job!!!! 3rd place in a Classic is a great accomplishment!! It sounds like you and Jav1 did a great job adjusting to the conditions. I can't believe the heat.
Ron was pretty upset about a couple of big smallies he and his brother lost. Thats fishing though. They don't count until their in the well. He told me that his brother lost the biggest smallie they have ever hooked in a tournament.
Sounds like it was a great tournament.

| 44 boats, 1st got a new 18.5ft triton with a 150 on it and $1000 bonus 2nd got maybe $1200-$1000 3rd took $500 (top 3 also get free entry to next years classic and do not have to fish any tournaments) and so on, big bass was $440. They gave away 2 entries to the bassmasters elite series as a co, many gift cards to D@R, top 15 or so got drift socks and other products, and many more prizes. They also rented a room at the great wolf lodge with a bar and catered, it was very nice. The results are now posted on the website.
