Pipkens won again with 27-13 and big bass at 6-13. That dude is dialed in up there and is always a step ahead of his competitors. The device he used to see beds in tough sightfishing conditions this year was brilliant, I actually was brainstorming on the way up and thought of a similar device but it was too late to put something together.
Me, skeeterman, and another buddy camped at Aloha for the entire week and found a good amout of 4-5.5 pounders on beds for Phil but it was not meant to be. It did not go our way for any of us on tournament day. Phil had a punk CO angler who thought we spent all that time and $$ so he could catch a big bag. Phils first area in Burt had 3 smallies that went 5, 5-7, and 5-8 within 100 yards all very hard to see and he had them to himself. Unfortunatly the water dirtied more and he could only locate one of those beds and his CO casted to the front of the boat and cought it, a 5-7. From what I was told he did this the rest of the day and got his line wrapped up in the trolling motor nemerous times. What a crappy day for Phil although he scrambled and ended up with 18-8 got his points and getting ready for Sandusky.
Our other buddy Jason Fowler fished as a CO and drew a boater who sounds like struggled finding beds. Jason weighed in 3 bass for 12+ pounds and said he was sighting beds for his boater and giving them to him all in Mullet Lake. Huge mistake if he waited to point them out and cought two more solid bass he would of been between19-20 pounds and in the top 4 for the tournament. Oh well lesson learned I guess.
I had the worst draw you could possibly have I think. When talking at the meeting my boater told me he has been there since Wen and never seen a bed. Shocked He said he checked Crooked lake two days prior and cought 15 pounds cranking so we were going there. Shocked I thought to myself maybe this will be a good thing I spent some time there the past week and have an area that produced a number of 4-5.5 pound smallies with only a couple passes. Well the run to Crooked and back took 4.5 hours of our day. He started in my spot because he thought his crankbait bite was better when the sun was up well same deal in my spot. We fished it for 30 min and I cought my two small keepers and he broke off a 5 pounder that jumped 3 feet in the air trying to shake his tube. He moved to some dropoffs and cranked for the next 3 hours and cought his one fish then decided to go Largemouth fishing. Shocked All we seen was carp and pike and the day was over. I might add that tournament day was ideal sightfishing conditions flat calm and sunny along with an explosion of spawning bass on Burt & Mullet and I missed it all. So much disapointment after a day like that I felt like I never even had a chance to do well although thats the risk you take when fishing as a non-boater. Hopefully I can get a good draw for once at Sandusky, I got some ground to make up!
