| I went fishing this morning for a couple hours before work on long lake in portage. I was using a black booyah buzzbait, 1/2 ounce with a free swinging trailer hook and was getting some good action. But I only landed 2 bass and one pike. I probably lost close to 10 fish, some right away, some halfway to the boat, and one or two at the boat. I was using a medium heavy quantum alliance rod, shimano reel and 20 spiderwire stealth line. A couple times I tried hoarsing the fish in, sometimes I really tried to play them. I couldn't seem to improve my hook up ratio. Any suggestions?

My advice would have been to stop using the buzz bait that day. From what you described the bass didn't seem to be commiting to the buzz and that is why they wern't getting hooked well. But they wanted top water so I would have swithed to a popper. Bass rarly come off a buzz bait if they really want it.

| A popper might have worked, I didn't try that. It was pretty dark fishing from 5:30-8, overcast and a misty rain and wind about 10 mph. We tried a jitterbug for a bit and I made a few casts with a zara puppy and a white indiana blade spinnerbait with no hits. A few of the fish we landed were hooked up on the buzzbait and not the trailer so I felt like the bait choice was good. And my black buzzbait was outfishing my partners white/chart buzzbait about 3 to 1. Could I have just been hoarsing them in to quickly with to stout of equipment? How much should you play a fish in open water with submerged vegetation?

| NOt much. With stout equipment. you should have those fish in the boat in seconds..Sounds like u played them too much.. but as Justin said u dont lose fish on buzzbaits if there eating it.Funny this should come up i had a strong bite in Detroit River on a buzzer. This last weekend. It was a funny deal that wasnt gonna win the tourney but had potential to put some nice fish in the boat when the bait was active. I only missed 2 and of course they were the first 2 that blew on it.. Both giants.. Darn nerves i think i pulled it away from them..every fish i caught on it ripped the rod outta my hand when they hit so that was what they wanted. always had both hooks buried in there mouth..your deal might've been they wanted it sitting a little slower like a popr. they mightve ate it better..Might have wanted to throw a painted blade spinnerbait instead..also..stands out better. with the overcast and wind.. |

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll have to be quicker next time to make a change if it happens again. I usually have had good hook up ratios on buzzbaits so I was really surprised by all the ones that got off. But then I've been missing lots of fish on all sorts of topwaters lately. Hopefully I'll correct that soon with the good fall bite coming. I'm just starting to take the time to learn how to "walk-the-dog" and am really enjoying that technique but I've lost two half way to the boat that about broke my heart.
Just have to stick with it until you figure it out I guess. Any hook suggestions to improve those style of baits?

| When I am fishing open water, I like to use a #2 Mustad tripple grip treble or a #2 ewg treble from Gamakatsu on my buzz baits and spinnerbaits. This really helps on St Clair when the big smallies are smacking a spinnerbait. Use a piece of surgical tubing to keep the hook from falling off.

| I thought about trying that after we were done fishing. The weeds were down far enough that it would have worked. I've never tried it though. Good to know someone else has had success with it. Have you ever tried adding a feathered treble?? Just a thought to add a different look to the buzzbait? Thanks for the tip.
