Good Luck, I will also be on St Clair Sat the 12th fishing with the GLB guys for the DK open. St Clair is always a blast, and the fishing right now is as good as it gets out there. Im sure those guys will get on the smallies, Ill post a report when I get back.

It was an amazing time on St. Clair. We caught about 21 pounds of smallies and a couple toads. I was really surprised about the 15 pound stringer of largies we caught with the smallies. I'm going to post the full report on my website.

It was an amazing time on St. Clair. We caught about 21 pounds of smallies and a couple toads. I was really surprised about the 15 pound stringer of largies we caught with the smallies. I'm going to post the full report on my website.

The water was sturred up in the morning but was clearing rapidly throughout the day. The water temp was 59-62 degrees depending where we were.

Well Saturday was a case of bad timing, The wind was a blowing and thats not a good thing on St Clair. Everyone was expecting 20 pound sacks, and that would have happened if it was the day before. We had 3-5 foot swells atleast all day which kept most of the field close to the ramp. I fished with Richie Chambless who has an ABA tournament on St. Clair next weekend and has fished St. Clair for 9 years competitively, so I was in good hands. He has a 19 foot stratos so the ride got rough, we speared waves instantly and filled the boat with water and soaked our raingear, a good way to wake up in the morning. He wanted to fish Muskamoot or strawberry Is., but his good buddy Skip was going there, and he thought the style of fishing there would not be fun for me. So he wanted to show me a good time since I came so far and would get all the info he needed for his tournament from Skip.
All the hype about the mile roads sent us and half the field there where we fished the entire day. This was a mistake in my mind due to the wind which muddied up the entire stretch. Rich did not want to beat up his boat on such a rough day and with minimal $ on the line so we drug tubes all day there. Rich was throwing a half ounce with a green extreem tube on a baitcaster with 14 pound test. This shocked me with a guy who fished St. Clair houndreds of times, 14 pound test with a baitcaster who would have thought. When I saw that I knew I would catch more fish. I threw a 3/8 bite-me 60 degree with rattle jighead alternating a green with gold flake tube and extreem canadian mist and green craw. I was using a 7 1/2 foot loomis spinning rod with 6 pound Seagur Flouro line. The Smallmouth were off and on the mile roads, the first hour and a half I boated 3 to Richies 0, biggest being 3 12 on the golden rule. But let me tell you that was not accurate, all the smallmouth were FAT. So I estimated it at 4.5. The next two hours of dragging only landed walleye and rock bass. In the mean time Rich was giving up all hope, and started talking about how it was his worst day ever on St. Clair. He went 4 hours without a bite and I had 10 pounds with 3 fish and many junk fish. So I offered him some tubes and jigheads. He put them on and in with an hour and a half left to go he boated 3 fat smallies and I got 1 and broke off the biggest of the day. He was expecting a long rough ride back so we headed back with 45 min to go and it only took 15 min. So I only got to fish for 5 hours, not enough especially since they just started turning on for us again. After it was all said and done our best 5 went 14 pounds 8 ounces on the golden rule, but in our estimation 18 to 19 pounds.
Now who could have possibly been on the big bite, well Skip of course fishing the exact area Rich was going to go. Skip had two non-boaters with him aswell and he went on to say that if it was an individual tournament all three of them would have came 1 2 3 with 20+ each. Skip took first with 21.5 pounds on the Golden Rule, so much more than that maybe 25+. To think that would have been us but Richie made a mistake in judgement looking out on my behalf, oh well. I still had a great time and learned alot.

Don't paper tourneys go by length? If so, aren't largemouth usually longer than smallies.

You could have stayed in the channels and caught largemouth and not got wet.

Pretty rough day it sounds like.

Yes it was a paper tourney but we all had the golden rules to bump the fish and next to the length is the average weight of a bass that size. Ya we could have stayed in the channels but my boater did not want to do that. It was rough but nothing we couldnt handle.
