I finished in 36th place with 4 fish, the only 4 bites I got during the tournament! I fished grass mats both days but had to resort to a crankbait when I saw a drop off come across the graph close to where the boat was and a Strike King Red Eye when I was able to throw out of the mats and onto a flat, grass mats were not the deal to be fishing! The big bags of bass were coming from Shell beds in the main river. JVD ended up in 3rd place and Luke Gritter finished 9th. We were all happy with how we did!

Jr,

It's nice to hear you had a good experience in Florida. To bad the fishing wasn't a little better for you. Hopefully you learned a bunch of new stuff.

Would you have rather fished as a boater? Was your experience as a non-boater a good one? And would you recommend being a non-boater?

Justin

In general I would say that the co angler side of a tournament is a good deal if you want to learn a few new things about the south. It's not exactly my game though and I did not like it all that much. I was confident about catching a limit fairly easily in the tough conditions if I was fishing shell beds in the main river but I was far from that. My first day partner's location sounded like what was going but it was far from and I ended up getting screwed without a flipping stick, so always bring everything as a co angler not just what you are told to fish because I literally made around 3-5 quality casts all day. Overall I would reccomend fishing as a co angler if you want to get started, but it's not what I want to do.

Santee Cooper, May 8th I think. Hopefully I draw up with someone who will get me away from small channels. JVD and I will find them during practice so watch out for him at Santee, although the tournament will probably be moved to Clarks Hill or Lake Murray.

Why is it going to be moved? Santee would be incredible.

Water level problems. Santee is down over 10 feet. I won't be upset if it's moved close by because Santee is loaded with snakes, very deadly and dangerous as well. A lot of the lakes in that region are suffering horribly, that's why they have been trying to get the water from our Great Lakes. I sure hope the states and Canadian provinces stand by their agreement to keep our water here.

They aren't the only states after our water, others have been after it for a long time. Rich Charleston lives in North Carolina and he said Falls Lake hardly has any water. Only the main river channel has water.

When the water does go back up there should be some killer spawning habitat for the largies. Rich told me new trees, shrubs, and grasses are growing where there use to be water. Hopefully they get some rain.

I just viewed some pictures of santee cooper and its bad real bad. It sucks for fishermen and the businesses there but its a natural cycle. Nature will not stay the same forever and is always changing, people will just have to deal with it down there. Its rediculous that they want our water, they chose to live in that location so if they dont like the lack of water there move.

If you really want to see an eye opener look up Lake Lanier, it's the worst. I think it's down 20 feet now, Atlanta is going to be in trouble when it comes to drinking water. Not to sound horrible or anything but the south really needs a major hurricane with lots and lots of rain to be dumped into Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas.

I like this part of the interview:

The tournament's over now; his first professional event is behind him. Next is the Southern Open on Santee Cooper in May. VanDam's primary career focus will be to develop sponsorships. Otherwise he'll be in class at Western Michigan University, studying, working at his father's store and spending time with his girlfriend.

The kid just won 20k....lol For the next couple of events he can sponsor himself...lmao
