I still don't know why I like this lake, maybe because it's fun watching smallies throw your bait back to the boat from 50 feet away!! Spent about 3 hours out there with my wife, most of it in high winds with lots of boat traffic. I think I found a good smallie area. Lots of turquoise beds still in the water, with no fish on them. Did have a few spit my bait at me, but with the high winds I probably had more bite that I couldn't feel. Had to start sticking the rod in the water to keep my line from floating away, and had to use the drift sock AGAIN on Magician. What a screwy summer so far. Couldn't put together a solid pattern as every time I started to get on fish we would get blown all over and the boats would start in again. I think I could really figure things out if I spent a little more time there in a row. Always seem to do decent there, just never fish it much. I think I am going to fish Paw Paw this weekend, wind is looking a little high for Lake Michigan, and I have a few things I want to try. Not fishing the BAU this weekend, I am sick of 6 boat tournaments. Good luck Justin and John, hope you whack em again!

1Jav,
So instead of being able to qualify for the classic you will not fish? I do not understand this as I did the math and you can still make the cut. Sure you only have 6 boats but 3 get to fish for a boat. You are talking about fishing Stren and the odds of getting to the classic are much better with the BAU. I was hoping that you and TCook would fish because your not that far out of it. It does not go by weight it goes by place, so technically you can beat John and Justin if they do really bad and you guys do good.

We, Tim and I, have already discussed our plans for the BAU, and that's what it's going to be. I don't think fishing Magician is going to give us the chance we need, so we are going to hold off and run a different division, or fish the make-up like we did last year. I have talked with Jay a few times and I know how it is all going to go, so I am setting myself up for the best chance without forking over more than I need to. It's not about being out of it, it's about fishing for the championship, and I don't think doing it in division 8 is going to be our ticket. We would have to win, and all fo you know that lake a lot better than we do, so that is not a high probability. It's simple, we fish a bigger division, or parts and the make-up, and we have a better chance of making it for the money invested. Your division would only get one wildcard, so 4 boats would actually fish for the championship, but a bigger division gets more. I plan on making it by placing, not being a wildcard. I banked our money on the wrong part of the lake and it changed, so we have to adjust with it. Nothing against any of you, just playing my odds.

Rich I understand what you are saying but do the math it is almost imposible to make the 50% cut after last place on Paw Paw. Justin and John will not finish last so it is a waste of $$ sorry to lower the payout on you guys but it has to be that way. Anyways we are not even close to being prepared, we had no time to prefish. If BAU decides to take everyone again this year who fishes two we will just hit the make up tournament on muskegon like last year.

Well here is the math you came in 6th so here is the point break down
100 pts 1
90 pts 2
80 pts 3
70 pts 4
60 pts 5
50 pts 6
10 show up points
5 pts for each fish
so you had
50+10+(5*5) = 85 pts
3rd is 80+10+(5*5)= 115 pts
so if you come in 1st with 5 fish you can have 100+10+(5*5)=135 + 85 = 220 pts.
if 3rd place comes in 5th - 60+10+(5*5)=95+115 = 210 pts
so there you have it you still can make the cut. Big Fish Break all ties in the tournament even on the points. |

I think we had almost 12 pounds and it was a great time dodging storms. We won $410 dollars in a 4 boat tournament and qualified to fish for a boat. Not bad to me

Good job, so I take it the fishing wasn't full of big fish again. I think it's the postspawn funk, but what do I know. Good job guys! It's not the peace of mind I am after, even though the thought if genuine was appreciated. It's the conservation of money. Not going to fish for $135 knowing nothing. Haven't been able to prefish, haven't found fish the few times I was there, so why throw the money in, especially when you don't have it? I'll finish my ranting on my other post. Please don't take any of this wrong Justin, I am simply venting.

You're a great guy! I'm hoping to see you guys soon again and I agree on not putting the money in if you are sure you won't win it back because everything is so expensive these days. Keep me updated on how you do throughout the season and just when you go fun fishing.
Good luck again |

Now that I've thought about your earlier post Rich, here is a good reason why I didn't fish Sunday at Magician, as if I haven't had enough. I don't hope people will do bad. I hope I will do good. I can't bring myself to hope someone misses a key fish, or that they finish 5th in a tournament. I can't hope for that. Same thing as running to my spot on tournament day to find someone about 50 yards downbank and trolling in my direction. I can't bring myself to pull up in front of them. I just can't do it. I find it hard to do in practice. What were the results anyways? Can you post them in the BAU section? And is somebody going to have to start a post like they do every year about the NBAA not posting results fast enough before BAU will start updating their site with some regularity????

Sorry not in charge of the website, but I voiced about posting quicker. We do make it a point that everyone at the tournament knows the results before leaving.
1. Justin/John Jr. - 11.xx (some odd change) 5 Fish
2. Rich/Jim - 9.89 5 fish
3. Jake - 8.xx 5 fish
4. Nick/Eric 8.xx 5 fish
everyone caught 5 fish and multiple fish so it was a fun day for everyone. |

ok so ive thought about this and im going to throw this out the nextyear if the bau is still in swing im going to put toagether a division on lake michigan! i gaurantee we will get the best turnout of a division this circut has seen. switching the lauch site willl make it fair. (lots of guys like chicago but well make them fish indiana and michigan waters.) theyll show up! we have to start taking the resource thats in front of us and expanding on it! in years to come we can compete with erie. i think there are bigger fish here. both species. ive caught numerous 6+ largemouth in lake michigan! (tcook if you spill the beans ill beat you!) -skeeterman-just something to think about.(got a question so if i show up for one bau and the wild card am i in??? i bet where scratching our a$$ looking for 50 boats to the classic now??? |

I'm a numbers guy, so I'm waiting for the site to be updated so I can see how many boats are in each division. My guess, 95 boats overall that will fish a whole division, if that. A lot will cut their losses like I did. But, that doesn't leave many more than 50, and if they assume 25% will not show because of one reason or another, that leaves a lot of invites. Sounds like a change in plans, like everyone that fished 2 tourneys can come and compete again!!! Muskegon 2nd chance, here we come!!

Skeet,
Lake Michigan would be a great place to have a couple tournaments. Get it together!!! I know I would come down to fish as long as the waves are a little smaller than the ones that sunk the Edmond Fitz Gerald.
Someone needs to spill the beans about the 6 pound largies in lake Michigan Just kidding...Keep that a secret. I know I would.
