Paw Paw Lake was the destination of choice for Ron Nelson and I this chilly afternoon. We had hopes of catching a couple walleye, a few fat Largies, and maybe a couple smallies. It was bitterly cold outside, in fact there were a few flurries. The water temperature was 47 degrees and there was still a bunch of thick green weeds growing. Most of the baitfish and the bass were still buried in the weeds. I caught the first bass of the afternoon on a blade bait that weighed 4 pounds 1 ounce. It hit right at the base of the weed edge when the blade was falling. We fished around hitting main lake pionts for the next hour but we were only able to catch a couple more 2 pound largemouths. We weren't even marking and fish on the graph. We decided to switch gears and fish the inside weed edge with traps. I caught a decent sized pike on my first cast and it ended up stealing my trap right by the boat. A few casts later a fat 3 pounder inhaled my trap and came in easily. I had two other fish swirl at my trap and miss it on the inside weed edge.
We knew we weren't going to get any walleye fishing the inside weed edge so we started fishing turns with blade baits. Ron talked me into getting my under water camera out to investigate the bottom. I think he just wanted to distract me because while I was looking in to the camera he set the hook on a fat 6 pound walleye. It turned out to be our only walleye of the day but our goal was accomplished. |
