Trying to plan a long weekend to do some ice fishing. Does anyone have any suggsestions on where to try? We're gonna stay in the L.P. and I have considered lakes like Houghton, Hamlin and Portage. We'll also need a place to stay so if you have any experience on cabins and such that would be appreciated. Thanks.

I've never been but I always hear about Houghton Lake being a great Ice Fishing lake. It's shallow so the Ice is safe and there are a bunch of Walleye and Pike to be caught. Use small jigging spoons or tip ups with live bait. The key is to find a weed edge. At least thats what a article in North Woods told me. Very Happy

I think this weekend is there tip up town event.

Last I heard the ice wasn't safe on Hamlin anymore I'm guessing after this weekend it probably will tighten back up though. I hear that they have been doing real well lately on the perch, pike and walleye on Houghton.

Well, we are heading to Lake City on Thursday to stay on Lake Missaukee. I've read that it's a decent place to ice fish and it's half way between Houghton and Cadillac so we should have plenty of options. I'm gonna try to keep a Tip-Up out most of the time I'm fishing to get some bigger fish. I haven't used these much so any tips are appreciated. We may also try for some walleye either jigging or on a Tip-Up. I'm sure it'll be better than workin fish or no fish.

Just returned from Lake Missaukee. The bluegill fishing up there was pretty good but getting big fish was kind of tough. Probably caught ten to every 1 keeper but we had 7 people fishing so we still brought home plenty of fish. Covered lots of water with the help of a 4 wheeler which made things pretty nice. We ended up staying right on the lake so we could take off and fish right from the cabin. We did catch a few small largemouths to make things exciting. We tried walleye fishing one afternoon on a different lake but only caught 2 huge Rock Bass, one was on a tip-up. We did see a guy catch a nice walleye so we know it could be done if we make it back up there. It took me less than three hours to make the trip and the cabin was pretty nice and very reasonably priced so I may check into going back sometime. Later.

Scott.
