What experiences have you had crankin down deep? (15+') I have never tried it too much. I threw around a DD22 a little last year with no results. But then again, about 5% of the bass i catch are on cranks. I just dont use them very often, i know i should. What are your favorite cranks, and what types of retrieves or patterns do you try to target?

Deep crankin is hard to beat during late summer and early fall patterns when bass are schooled up on baitfish. If you can find deep structure then the key is bumping it, then stopping your bait. A lot of the time the strike comes right after a pause or an erratic motion. Deep weeds "20-25 ft" are a baitfish magnet.

The key to cranking deep bass is using your depth finder. Use your depth finder to see if balls of baitfish are around. If there are then the bass are close. Keep moving around until you notice long streaks shooting across your screen. Those streaks are bass. If you ever notice this going on then get your crankbait in the water. The bass will smoke it.

That being said, wind direction dictates the places baitfish will school up. The bass always follow the bait. The color of your crank bait means everything. Change it up until you start-getting bites. I use natural colors when it's sunny, and bright colors when it's cloudy or the water is stained. If your not noticing any bait on your depth finder then get out a jig or skip docks because your wasting time.

I think the point about making contact with the cover is the key. I have not had that much crainkbait success but when I have or been fishing with someone who had I think contacting the weeds or whatever is the key. Also, just because you're fishin a DT-16 don't think you turn the crank 3 times and you're at 16 feet. If you make a couple casts are not physically feeling something then you need to make a change.

i hear kvd say that when hes fishing a crankbait he gets most of his hits hitting off the objects or just barley hitting the top of the weeds and ripping it free then the bass will smoke it. i usually like to troll my dt 16 becauese i dont have a depthfinder so that works for me
