Tcook,

I know you live near Portage (I Think) and I was wondering if you've fished the discharges on Lake M this winter?

Do you know which ones are open to fish around Whiting, and East Chicago?

I haven't been down there yet but I want to hit em up while it's still cold.

Justin

no problem, I wouldnt expect you to keep track of everyones locations I know I dont. me and Jav launched out of Portage maybe 8 times last year and the only discharge I seen in the areas we fished was US Steal about 10 miles following the southwest shoreline taking a left out of the calumet river. Its in the corner of the long wall extending out where the canal begins in front of US steal. I assume it is a warm water discharge and I talked to a guy out there who said that it is one of the better areas, we never fished it though but will this year for sure. maybe skeeterman will chime in he fishes that area of lake michigan alot and would likley know where all the discharges are at. I would be real careful if you go out there sometime soon, it gets bad real quick fishing in front of any of those walls. It can blow up in a matter of a half hour and the waves will defract of those walls and creat much bigger waves from all directions, you can spear waves going under 20mph and thats bad news with that cold water, but im sure you have dealt with situations like that before.

I've seen guys heading that way lately, but haven't checked into any warm water discharges. I went to the seminar that Jones did at BPS here and he kept mentioning ice-out, so I assume they wait also for the ice to come off the Lake beforethey head out, so the discharge probably isn't as good of an idea as it may seem. The hole in the wall TCook is refering to is a good spot to fish for spawners, but if you got the gas and the know how, head over towards Chicago. There are some off-limit areas you can fish around that hold the real monsters out there at that time.

Jav I was not talking about the hole in the wall to enter the lagoons, I was talking about that huge discharge all the way at the end of the walls we fished where the canal opens up for shipping and another wall extends out towards the lake. I think we trolled by it once but never actually fished it, my assumption is that it has to be discharged water that was used to cool something in the plant we just never checked it out.

Justin-You could locate it on google earth im sure

Yeah guys theres a discharge @ US steel. Not a great warms water discharge but right now its dropping water warmer then the lake. Went down for a ride today to see the Harbor in michigan city. still some ice on the lake but the harbors open. Another week or two and the lake will start to get good. Water temps in the 40-45 degree start a huge push of big smallies. Ill be out there most likely last week of March. Now as far as another warm water discharge there is one west of hammond that drops some real warm water into the lake. like herman said theres some good areas over towards chicago. i have alot of friends that fish the lake out of east chicago. they know how to catchembig there and have let me in the door with them so im not gonna blurt out too much. Pretty much find yourself a steel wall and go to town. Im really starting to tap the resource here in michigan city i caught a huge bag here one time last year and that was it!! and my biggest was a largemouth.-skeeterman-

Thanks a lot for the info guys! I'll have to check it out down there while bass fishing is closed in Michigan.

Tcook,

I found a couple discharges on google earth that look pretty good.
