After reading a couple other posts with talk of 5-6 lb'ers left and right, I am almost afraid to write my first post. Go easy on a newcomer, ok guys?
My good buddy and I went to Muskegon Lake for a few hours on Saturday. Can't hardly believe it, but it was our first time out this season. Spent a short time along a breakline that has treated us well before in the spring but nobody was home. We assumed the fish moved up already so we started hitting the backs of marinas, etc. Sure enough - fish all over! Lots of cruisers. Some were on beds but not many locked on yet. Only found a handful of smallmouth - most were largies. We didn't officially count but we estimate (conservatively) we caught about 40 keepers. Most were 2-2 3/4 lb clones with a few 3's thrown in. We (actually he) caught two smallmouths well over 4 - One was at the boat launch while I was getting the truck! Should be at least a week or two of really good sight fishing to go. I did best with a Zoom Speed Craw on the beds while my partner did nearly as well with a small (brand unknown) finesse worm. Couldn't get much going with senkos, tubes, etc.

Nice Report. A 40 fish day with a couple huge smallies thrown into the mix is an awesome day. Did you see any females sliding around the largie beds?
Hopefully I can get up to Muskegon sometime this year!!!

No not really. They seemed pretty grouped by species. And like I said, we didn't see a whole lot of smallies to begin with. One the bigger smallies we caught was tight on a bed, though, with the other surrounding beds being mostly occupied by largemouth.
Since my church club tourneys shouldn't compete with you, maybe we can share some info as the season progresses - like I have done with TCook before. What do ya think? We start on opening day on Croton, then fish every other Sat through August. The others include: Hardy #1, White, Muskegon #1, Grand River, Muskegon #2, Hardy #2 (doing this from memory - may be off in the order). See ya!
