| What is your favorite stretch of the river for smallies and why? What baits do find most productive?

The Benton Harbor stretch is by far the best stretch for smallies. It's the best for both numbers and size if you ask me. A lot of big smallies come in from lake Michigan to spawn in the spring, and feed heavily on shad and crayfish in the fall. During the summer the lake smallies stay out in the lake somewhere and come by the pier heads when the water temperature in the lake drops.
The benton harbor stretch is an amazing fishery!!

| What are your favorite spots? I enjoy fishing by the trainbridge and the Coast Guard Station. What is your go to bait? I prefer tubes and rattle traps.

The coast guard station can be good but everyone fishies that part. The trick to that river along with other lakes is to find stuff that others don't fish and the river is full of of those spots. There are sand bars and cuts all over the place but only some of them hold fish and there are reasons for that. The only way to find them is time on the water. The only tip I will say is that there is not reason to go any father up river than Eagle Point. The rest you have to find on your own. Good Luck!!!

i launch my boat from river park. You can see it from I-94. Eagle point is about 1 mile down river from the ramp. Eagle point is a marina more than an actual point.

I have never launched there. How is the river to run down to st. Joe. Is it fairly clean and you can run or is it difficult to navigate?
Thanks for the info.

Eagle point is the last marina up river just past the hospital. I usually launch at River park just off 94. Exit 28

Don't be fooled!! Smallmouth stack up in small areas when cold front push through. A lot of times it turns them on like no other. Don't let cold fronts keep you from fishing for river smallmouth.
