I've not caught any myself but i've seen them. Last fall I saw a dead one probably about 28-30" floating on the surface. I hear there are some good sized ones in there.

I used to bank fish at Lake Michigan College all the time a few years back. That place was filled with toad smallies up to 6.5 lbs that a buddy pulled in. I went a week ago to test out what depth a few new crankbaits would dive with different line sizes and noticed a few signs saying no fishing hmm. Also had a security guard say last year that they killed all the fish off due to diseases. I didnt know if I should take that as fact because he might be saying that to keep me from fishing it. Last week I proved the fish were not killed off, had a few smallies take my baits and they were good sized. They might have signs up but it will not keep me away. I was reminded how good the smallmouth fishing can be out there.
The ideal time to go is Sunday very early or the last few hours of the day. I say this because Sunday there is no guard and the smallies bite best at these hours. The most effective bait is a tube of course, throw against the walls under all bridges especially the main bridge in front. On the left wing there is a water jet and the smallies hang out where it creats current or on the edges of the current. Also you can get some big largies at the mendel center across from the handy cap parking section, there are concrete slabs 10-20 feet out, fish the outside edge with a jig or texes rigged worm.

| The guard was correct. They did a fish kill on those ponds about a year ago. It was in the newspaper with a picture of them netting hundreds of dead crappie and other fish. Maybe some fish in remote ares of the pond made it.
