Well seeing that nobody else is going to post, ill go again. How is the fishery in barron lake. Ive heard its a great multispeciese lake, including some good smallie fishing. Im mainly interested in the smallmouths.

I have a friend on lives by that lake and he says that there is some good fishing there but if you are looking for smallies you need to learn the rivers. Also diamond in the early spring is very good for smallies, but if you go out there openning day they are very hard to find.

well i hit the river every day in the spring when the smallies are by the dam in berrien. Ill catch 20 or more a day. But my boat/motor isnt really river worthy.

I know a couple guys from the Niles area that love Barron Lake and say that the fishing is awsome during the Pre-Spawn/Spawn. There are huge, mean smallies in Barron Lake and quality Largeheads as well. I guess it's tough to fish when the weeds get thick in the summer. Hit it up early!!

Barron Lake is decent for smallmouth bass. There are alot more largemouth int he fishery though that can be caught but most of the fish are around 14-16 inches, not alot of big ones. I have caught smallmouth there up to 6 pounds but there are not many and I do not reccomend fishing during the spawn on Barron. Almost all of the smallmouth bed in one location and can be easy to catch but I did that once and never will again, I study the fish out there too and the ones that were caught immediately left the beds and did not come back to hatch their young. It may be because smallmouth are not native to Barron Lake but were introduced from the Niles stretch of the St. Joe.

Are the smallies actually spawning on Barron Lake or just going through the motions? There are smallies on Paw Paw that just go through the motions.

Have you seen any males guarding thier fry/nest?

The smallmouth spawn on Barron Lake just like they naturally would anywhere else. They are very protective but like I said before if you catch them I have noticed, along with a couple other guys, that they move off the beds and do not come back. The best time to catch smallies there is in September or October on spinnerbaits or jerkbaits.
