Don't know anything about how it works in the whole tournament Bass fishing industry, but as far as steelhead fishing goes and guiding... If you just want 50%-60% off of gear get a state issued guides license and do some guiding "technically you wouldn't even have to guide"... Most companies have pro-forms and if you have this license you are eligible for them. This wouldn't give you money from these companies when you won a tournament though.

After that you need to impress your local sales rep for that company. Most of the companies I deal with that is who makes the final say whether you are on or off, or at least play a huge role in the decision to put you on the actual pro staff.

Like I said I don't know jack about tournament Bass fishing, but can tell you that is an accurate description of what I have seen and dealt with myself when it has come to representing companies...

Good luck!

Its about the same. I didn't know you automatically received a discout it you were a guide. I've often thought about getting a guide license. It would be a perfect summer job for me Laughing

I have never heard of a company turning anyone down with either a Captain's license or just a Michigan inland pilots license for guiding on inland waters... They figure that if the guides clients see them using their stuff, it's really good advertising...

Just Remember its all about what you can do for the sponsors and not the other way around, you must believe in the product that your being sponsored by because if you don't who are you really kidding? Everyone wants free stuff but I can tell you that being sponsored allows you to get discounts but also you really need to work at the shows to sell the product. I think that if you find good product you need to continue using it reguardless if you get a sponsor or not. I wear Kaenon sunglasses and they are absolutely the best glasses on the market, I used to work really close with them when I was with Lantry's Outdoors (5 years ago) and I was able to offer good discounts to anglers but in time we had some issues; Instead of finding another sunglass company I continued to use Kaenon and swear by them and low and behold I was able to pick up Kaenon as a sponsor again and also a sales agent in order to pass on deals to other anglers. So my big point is if I have one at all is make sure that you believe in the product and due it justice by using it and telling others about it because that is what your sponsors need and deserve.

Anyone who would try and promote a product to others that they do not fully believe is the best product out there, in the end is probably going to not end up helping out that sponsor much anyway. Let's face it unless you are a really good liar and enjoy doing it often, why on earth would you ever want to be representing a companies product you don't fully endorse? I know this happens every day, but at least to me it is pretty obvious when you see a guy pushing a product that he does not truly believe in himself...
