Skeeterman,
I have learned that you don't have to be a great angler, just passionate about fishing and the companies product. Although it doesn't hurt to fish and win as many tournaments as possible. To get a sponsor you have to either know someone ar have something to offer companies. I didn't know anyone so I made a website. My website has been the reason I've gotten the sponsors I have. Once you're in with a company you have to prove you're helping them sell products. The more ways you can help a company the more the company will help you.
Rich Osgood "Squad Minnow" will be able to help you out more with the sponsorship side of fishing. He is great at networking with dealers and getting products into stores.
Fisherman1 also knows what it takes to get and maintain sponsorships so he sould be able to help with your questions as well.

Skeeterman,
Putting together a great resume starts from building contacts within the fishing industry and working well with customers. Honestly, a company could care less how you do in tournaments, look at Joe Thomas. Joe could sell you almost anything and that is what matters. When I began to set up my first sponsorships when I was 14. I thought I should go out there and aim for the sky and see what would come back. However, I am glad to have gotten a little older and grown more intelligent on the subject. I am only"sponsored" by the products I use and believe in anymore and that is what I advise you to do also. I also advise you to make great contacts within the industry because references are very important within this close industry. I know companies are flooded with sponsorship requests each day, Gamma was receiving 500 a day at this time last year and Jackall is receiving about 300 a day right now. You obviously need a resume that will stick out to the potential sponsor and it has to be filled with what you can do for them! I have been working so hard to get a Jackall deal recently because I believe they have the superior jerkbaits on the market, but the company is small and is slowly growing so I have choosen to wait and not persue any further companies at this time. I want to grow a small relationship with them now into something that may be big in the future. What you can do for a sponsor is the most important aspect they look for. A sponsorship is also very much misunderstood. A company isn't just going to throw deals at you because you win local tournaments, they are really hard work and it takes awhile to become well established within a company. After 5 years I am finally getting more into being paid a small amount for advertising products, a very small amount. I have just opened my own sports marketing company and am compiling presentations for anglers to submit to potential sponsors, I have helped 2 so far and am looking to expand if you are interested PM me. Both of my partners are BASS touring pros. |

| I think I figured out who you are Skeeterman, you're a heck of a fisherman. You fished a lot of the tournaments I've done and been in over the past couple years if you're who I'm thinking. You won the Four Flags on Diamond last year, heck of a fisherman. |

Bravo to both Justin and John,
They have both summed it up very well.
1. Believe in the product - I have seen so many guys want to be sponsored by companies like Jackall and I ask them what do you use now and they will respond with Strike King or Lucky Craft or Bandit etc... nothing wrong with using those baits if that is your deal but I ask then why do you want Jackall? and the response is that they have the high quality lures from Japan, I respond saying so if you have to pay for them they are not worth it but if you get to use them you like them. So my first response to anyone looking to be sponsored is to look at your tackle boxes, rods, reels and determine what you use and would like to represent.
2. Anyone can win a tounament --Joking--(not downplaying that side) you also have to be able to sell product, if you can catch fish and you can not talk to others about he products that you are using then your probably not a good fit at the time for a sponsorship.
3. I hear this all the time, If you sponsor me I will use the product and put your stickers on my windshield and truck. Well that is great so when you bought that Chevy Truck did they give you money to drive around with the Chevy Emblem on it? what about the Polo Shirt emblem are they sponsoring you with shirts since they have the horse on your shirt? I am sorry to say that "NO" is the anwser to that. What companies want is knowing that by sponsoring you that you will develop a customer base to where they can make a profit. If you will all the tournaments and don't tell people what your using or how to catch the fish----basically they do not want you. Why you might ask? because you have not sold any product you have just proved that you can catch fish on a secret bait. This is a hard thing to do, this year at Magician Lake we caught over 24 keepers behind other anglers where most boats could not get a bite; we lost by 1oz. and what is bad we never even culled out the smallest fish (our mistake) if it was under 15" we just threw it back and over 16" we would look for a 15" fish (sounded good until we lost by 1oz. - won't do that again) anyways the bait we caught them on was a Flick Shake a new product that Jackall was field testing and I was using some Japanese colors - I knew that Jackall was starting to release them into the U.S. market so at the end of the tounament I fessed up and showed people what I was catching them on. (I hope most did not believe me). This is the one tricky thing about a sponsorship you have to tell when things work in order to sell the product.
Skeeterman, if you have your resume compiled I will be more than happy to look it over and offer suggestions and other advise as to my thoughts.
John Jr. I have someone that wants to see your PPT. that your supposed to send me. email it to me so I can get that to them.

Squad Minnow says it all here.
I have a few sponsors that I rep for and I don't go all out to get more. I would love to have more, but hey....I only use a few products...so why lie about using other people stuff?
When I ran my youth program I had...sometimes too many...lots of sponsorships, but it all went to the kids...not me. but, I still went out and push their products to the parents...if they were into fishing the way we are.
With helping NBAA, I have managed to push quite a few products for their sponsors...so has John Jr.
My biggest sponsor is Save Phace....and I work my tail off for them here in Michigan. Last year they had over 300 field staff/pro staff members. They did a points system for us, so we could judge how well we are doing against each other. I ended up number 1 in the Nation and only 10% even turned in our paperwork. 38 people did anything to prove why they should stay with the company.
THAT IS WHAT SPONSORS WANT TO SEE FROM YOU.
What did they do for me? I got $$ and free stuff from them. So work ethics is a big part of being sponsored...in my opinion.

Here is a very nice write up:
Save Phace Top National Pro-Staffer - Steve Miller
2 Years ago NBAA sponsor Save Phace the makers of the (SUM) Sports Utility Mask put out a special incentive program to their pro-staff. In 2007 after the dust cleared and the points were added up, NBAA member and pro-staffer Steve Miller was the nation’s top pro-staff member for Save Phace. For those of you who attend almost any NBAA show or event you’ll always see Steve talking about the fantastic Save Phace Sports Utility Mask. Jerry Wright CEO of Save Phace quoted as saying
“Steve kicked some serious butt and did a GREAT job for us in the Mid-West. I truly believe that Steve has made a HUGE impact for Save Phace in his area and I wish I could clone him 1000 times over again”.
If you’re not familiar with Save Phace you’ll want to check out their fine line of Sports Utility Masks. These masks were originally made for anglers who wanted to protect their face from the elements of running high speeds across open waters. These mask have now evolved into perfect masks for paint ball games, motor cycles and other outdoor activities.
New for 2008 Graphic models that include a Skull, Predator and some really cool new styles will be available. Save Phace is also introducing new mirrored light smoked and mirrored yellow lenses plus new thermal pane light smoked lens.
In addition to the above Save Phace will now have the ability to put any logo, signature, store name, team trail tournament, etc. on any mask anyone orders. This will make for a fantastic looking one of a kind SUM for you. If you would like more details on this and the Sports Utility Mask please go to www.savephace.com
Will have to pay them $20 for all that......lol...I look like I am spitting....lmao

Awesome write up Steve! You're obviously well liked on that end, keep it up! This is the kind of stuff we aim for on promotional staffs. Not one word about a tournament in the write up, just how well he did for the company. Great job again!
See you in Grand Rapids. |
