Congrats to Tim for his 6th place finish on the non-boater side at Burt and Mullet!!! Not an easy task, but he got it done. I'll leave the details of his frustrations to him for writing when he gets home and settled in!! Congrats again Tim, awesome job!

| Its not going to hurt those lakes at all. The fish will probably still spawn this year anyway. The fish spawn almost year round there and you can find them all the time. Plus, a bass will spawn once its 12 inches long, which isn't even a keeper, and a million of those live there. I don't think they are fishing there next year though but its not going to hurt the lake. |

I asked that same question to a group of guys there at the camp site and they said many of the same smallmouth are found back on there beds within a day or two after the weighin but only the fish that were released in the same lake they were cought in. So if a smallie was brought from Burt and the weighin was in mullet they would likley not make the trip through the indian river back to there beds. I think John is right I dont think the BFL will be back to Burt & Mullet next year but probably the year after that. Atleast thats what the anouncer said at the end of the weighin, I am thinking probably charlevoix in 09.

Kudos to Paul Grove as well....
I don't have a degree in genetics (I am married to someone who does) but why would you want fry from a 12" bass instead of from a bass over 20". Must be that Texas save a lunker thing is a joke.
Cathead bay is the last place the smallies spawn up there and at that time the water temps on Burt/Mullet are lethal to bass eggs so they have to be absorbed by the fish. They surely do not spawn all year.
I really doubt Charlevoix is on the agenda for many $$$$$ reasons. Look for the spring BFL to be on Saginaw Bay. Betcha even money.
Congrats to all and good luck the rest of the year.

Charlevoix will be nice because people can run all over God's blue water from there.
I think canvsbk is right the bass wont actually spawn after the water hits a certain temp. BUT... They like to pretend

| OK well I know for a fact that the smallmouth do spawn almost all year in northern Michigan. The BAU tournament is a big example from last year. The classic was in the fall and a major wave of spawners were up. You can ask Randy VanDam or Rich about this and they will confirm it, I wasn't there but everyone said the same thing. The pure numbers of fish on those lakes and the area provide them for excellent spawning opportunities and they only move deeper during the summer and then back shallow during the fall. I've seen fry up there in August before. It's the weirdest thing but they do it and I can't explain why, I also agree that some do pretend in the shallow water and the eggs don't survive. Also, the 12'' bass have the genetics from the large fish so they are passing on the same codes and information to produce big bass, they are going to be huge in a few years themselves. I'm a more firm believer in the fact that post spawn fishing kills lakes way more than a spawning tournament. Post spawn fish are not handled properly in most cases and many may live through the weigh ins but then die after release, for example after each tournament for the past few years on Klinger I have seen fish floating from not being fizzed. Say 5 or 10 were there after each tournament on the low side and 4-5 tournaments were on Klinger each week over the summer and add up the keepers and ask yourself why you catch a ton of small bass on Klinger these days and no big ones????ummmmm???? |

| I do not beleive that bass spawn all year in MI but I do beleive that they double spawn. First in the spring and occasionally in the fall when the water temp is right. I just talked to a guy who fishes lake st clair year round and he told me the smallies and largies will double spawn on lake st clair and most other lakes. He said as proof last fall he tried to have a fish fry with a bunch of walleyes he would catch from st clair but came up short so he decided to catch a limit of largies in order to have enough fish to go around for the fam. He was in a familure spawning area and cought a couple fat females that looked to be on beds, when he cut them open they were full of eggs. This took place in late September.

We fished the tourney on Leelanau in the fall, and those fish were not fat from spawning, they were spitting up crayfish all day long. Almost every fish we caught was from sand grass, though we found a few in the gravel. They exhibited no attributes of spawning fish though.

| Sounds like a good tournament. I know a bunch of guys who found them spawning though. Randy VanDam was one of them and he wouldn't give you any bs. The double spawn when they actually hatch and have a chance I believe to be true in the shallow water as well. In the summer though if you do fish around there and you fish the clearer lakes look around 15-20 feet, especially on Charlevoix and the bays and you can find some, I don't know if the young will make it or not if they have them but look for them. |

I'm no expert when it comes to spawning fish but there are certain waters in southwest Michigan that will have fish spawning all year Every full moon I can find a pod of fresh fish setting on newly polished beds, defending them with their lives.
If it can happen down here then it can most certainly happen up North. I think
